edfringe 2017, part 2
Oct. 12th, 2017 08:54 pmThis is like 2 months overdue, but whatever.
Day 2!
120817
1320 Michael Legge (Stand 2)
1615 George Egg (Teviot)
1900 Sara Pascoe (Courtyard)
2220 Gein's Family Giftshop (Courtyard)
0000 Space Escape!! (Dome)
1. I'm an absolute nervous wreck whenever I meet comedians in person but god I'll never get over how sincerely NICE every single one of them have been. Michael is pretty much top of the list, he's an amazing person and I love him to bits. Last time I met him was two?? years ago and it was AWKward but he offered to get me a drink and that was cute.
This time around I was determined not to make as much of a fool of myself (if only that were possible). I was also really excited that he had a new edinburgh hour. And gosh, what an hour. I'll admit his style of comedy is a pretty niche/subtle thing and not exactly for everyone but I absolutely love it, there's just all these stupid little jokes that are 10x funnier if you got the nuances behind them (the jabs at the edfringe comedy scene, doctor who jokes, ALL the robin ince references, etc.) One of the main things about this show was addressing the death of his dog Jerk, a piece of news that still makes me sad because we all knew how much Michael adored her (I honestly can't imagine the loss he feels..) Jerk: The Musical was a perfect tribute -- dumb and funny and beautiful. What an angry, lovely voice. The David Bowie inspired track was especially poignant (*sings* fucking vegan food.....)
The day I saw Michael's show also turned out to be his birthday (I honestly can't remember if I intentionally bought my tickets for that date in particular?) so it was even more of a tickle when he offered (vegan) cake to the audience and kept forgetting his age. I remember (1) pointedly avoiding the front row (avoid the awkwardness!) thus sacrificing my chance of staring at his psoriasis up close; (2) sweating like a beast from the combination of the tiny upstairs venue, my sweater dress, and the NERVES. I knew he would be peddling merchandise after the show so I stalled while everyone was exiting the room and contemplated burying myself in a hole. Not that I needed to because Michael was SUCH A DELIGHT OH MY GOD. He recognised me (he remembered!!!) and gave me an unexpected HUG and I wanted to die from happiness. I bought a Jerk: The Musical vinyl from him (I don't even own a record player, what is this) and lived off the high for the rest of the day/week/month.
2. I got a bit peckish over the afternoon (I practically lived off pasta/fruits/crisps from Tesco during my trip) so it was just as well that I was seeing George Egg. Comedy and cooking is an odd combination, but he makes it work. It was so much fun watching him make a 3-course meal with DIY tools. All of the audience were given plastic forks before the show so we were all p much thinking the same thing (WHEN DO WE GET TO EAT THE STUFF) and haha we got to it in the end and all of it tasted SO GOOD

3. I suppose it's a good thing that Sara Pascoe and John Robin's shows are so timed that it's impossible to see both of them in the same day. It gave me a bit of time to process their takes on the same relationship and I can happily conclude that I still love them both. I'm a bit more of a John though, in the sense that I would probably react more like him (wallowing in shame and depression, yay). idk if I have anything more to add to this tbh
4. The inevitable effect of squeezing 5 shows into a day is the eventual jet lag and fatigue that catches up with me. Unfortunately it happened when I was at Gein's Family Giftshop's show so I may not have appreciated the performance at an optimal level. I don't remember much about the show except for the little bit with the nudity (oh god) and my tired brain trying to process the show-in-backwards thing they were attempting to do. I may give these guys another go some other day, hopefully while I'm more awake.
5. Another round with the Wifi Wars format! This time with a twist, as they pilot test a radio show idea. It would be a pretty huge thing if they could ever pull it off -- radio audiences live gaming along to the show while comedians improvised to the whacky space scenarios. I've never seen or heard of Foxcroft before this but he seems a nice dude -- there was an anecdote about him naming the SS Marcus Brigstocke as an apology for killing a pet lizard that made me laugh way more than it should. Also, well, I have a thing against improvisation comedy (this is obviously exempted if it in any way involves Andrew Hunter Murray, but I digress), so much of that fell flat for me. The games were still a ton of fun though, even though there was a thin veil of a plot tying the whole thing together. The idea still needs a lot of work, but I'm excited to see how they'll develop this.
ok that's all for today! more to come if I'm ever in the mood to ramble again.
