happy new year! here's my highlights of the year...

BOOKS!

Managed to finish 37 books this year, though there's a bunch of graphic novels in there... and all the Doctor Who/Torchwood stuff was old audiobooks/audio dramas that I sifted through during a time when I didn't have internet access Lol

Best book read all year would probably be Station Eleven! it really had its hooks in me by the end, I had to stay up all night ploughing through the second half of the story - love that feeling.

Dr Richard Shepherd's books were also a good read, probably the best representation of the job of a forensic pathologist I've encountered, really made me feel Seen. also so much stuff he mentioned actually tied back to lectures/teaching sessions we were having, so this counts as academic work right

Caitlin Doughty's (aka Ask A Mortician on youtube) books were fascinating and I definitely recommend them. Great insight into how the death industry works (Smoke Gets In Your Eyes) + different death rituals around the world (From Here To Eternity), just things that don't get discussed more often

Other honorable mentions in here would be Never Let Me Go (plot and worldbuilding that stays in your head for ages), Nanette (brutally honest autobiography), and Sidesplitter (memoir on growing up in clashing eastern/western cultures, and silly funny as well. would recommend the audiobook version)

MUSIC??

As per usual, TV soundtracks were a big highlight in my music - this year's included This Is Going To Hurt (both the tracks played on the show + the original compositions by Jarvis Cocker), and The Bear (The Refused's New Noise is an absolute jam)

Best release of 2022 would definitely be Bleed Out. fantastic album 100%

TELLY!

as extracted from my Trakt lists.

Along For the Ride was so lovely, just two comedians out on a cycling jaunt, and turning the Chill factor up to 11. very relaxing watch

The Bear was the total polar opposite LOL. fucking stressful show to watch but my god it was fantastic. Absolutely adore the cast, and it was so well shot (all those food prep bits... awoo) And the killer soundtrack as mentioned

Under The Banner Of Heaven was gripping television, I looked forward to new episodes every week. Andrew Garfield (and Gil Birmingham!) put on great performances and i am BITTER that andrew hasn't won an award for this yet

Ipcress File and Big Boys felt like sleeper hits and more ppl should watch them!!!

Station Eleven the TV show felt like a different beast than the book. A lot of change to the plot and characters but I think I enjoy it as a separate entity from the original source - for one, I love what they did with Kristen and Jeevan's characters, that really became the emotional heart of the show (and that ending!! fuck meee)

Bluey is on the list because Bluey is great. I've cried way too much at these stupid cartoon dogs.

Best on the list is definitely This Is Going To Hurt. I loved the live show, I loved the book, and the TV show just exceeded my expectations. So much of it felt so real to me - from the unrelenting pacing of medical work, the way the job breaks down your emotional barriers, and even the stupid little things like those fucking useless ward computer on wheels that run out of battery when you don't plug them in thus invalidating their entire point-- yeah this show really got to me. Shruti's entire plotline was haunting because I could see so much of myself in her, and I could've very well ended up where she did as well. Ben Whishaw and Ambika Mod were so so so good. Everything about this show is just A++++

VIDEOGAMES..?

what is there to say LOL. Dorfromantik is the ultimate "let's put on a podcast and do something with my hands" game. Hades is well... Hades hahah. Gris was beautiful, every scene you walked through was pretty much wallpaper material. Iconoclasts surprised me in a positive way as well - absolutely fascinating lore that I spent a good few days mulling over.

personal highlights???

• having [personal profile] crispfencer visit and dragging them to places!! enjoyed the time off with food and fancy hotels, and also seeing familiar places in a new light. even if we did get covid after...
