I'm back from my first successful ambulance escort! It was pretty miserable to be called up after a ~30-hour shift to do it but work is work. I piled a bunch of shit into a bag and hopped onto the ambulance and we made our 5-6 hour journey from labuan island to kota kinabalu. Ambulance drivers have SCARY skills, man. Driving on the road at that speed was insane and SO BUMPY HOLY CRAP. It was also miserably under-equipped, even the blood pressure monitor was packed in last minute. Thank fuck the patient was stable throughout the ride.
Hospital to ferry terminal was just the bumpy beginning. The ferry ride was quite pleasant, we barely even felt the seasickness. But after hopping back onto dry land it was crazy driving on uneven roads IN THE DARK all the way to QEH2 A&E. Putting on the siren in town was a buzz though, I have to admit. So cool.
The patient safely made it into hospital, and I ended up crashing at a friend's place for the night, which was really really nice of her on such short notice. It was a cosy dig! So much more spacious than my place. I'm so grateful that I actually have friends to put me up, lol. Otherwise I'd have to slum it in the ambulance or find a hotel.
I was meant to catch the first 8am ferry out of town, then make it back to continue clinic work but errrrr, I misjudged the time a bit (and the traffic) and left it late. Next ferry wasn't til 1.30pm. So I had time to wander around town! The jetty area was quite walkable for Malaysian standards and I ended up cosying up at a pancake shop for a couple of hours (brought a book, always essential on trips). There were so many tourists around, so many people in beach wear. Wtf. But I ended up feeling like a tourist too, which was a welcome change of pace. Loitered around the street and a nearby mall, then hung out at the jetty staring at the pretty sea water until it was time to board.
Boat ride was quite uneventful. My iPod tragically ran out of power so I napped the entire journey back to labuan. The ferry was surprisingly... clean. Or less manky than I expected.
Seeing so many people dressed up for their beach adventures gave me a bit of wanderlust, lol. Maybe I'll plan an island vacation next. Sabah's got some really neat tropical beauties around.
But ONTO our usual blog formatto:
PODCASTS
I spent most of my time around town catching up on Brendon Burns' podcasts and arrrgh now I'm so tempted to catch his and Craig Quartermaine's show at edfringe. Maybe I WILL. I haven't seen Brendon live since his excursion to Malaysia a couple of years ago. He's one of the good 'uns.

I'm so bummed that they've properly discontinued the iPod now (re: shuffle and nano models). iPods were a proper gamechanger in terms of music technology. I don't know how I'd live without an iPod classic. I love having a handy 100GB mp3 player around, and that it's so easily compatible with my podcast library. It makes me properly depressed that I'd never get a similar replacement if my current model ever dies out. Noooo. I'm practically codependent on the damn thing, I NEED to have it around when I do chores, when I drive, when I'm at work, or when I'm just out doing the shopping. It bugs me when I don't have my earphones with me, because I've got SO MANY podcasts and radio shows to catch up on, it's like a waste of time if I wasn't constantly listening to them... I think I have a problem...
